Bitter-sweet melancholy in recital

The lunch hour recital yesterday by Richard Thorn (violin) and Anne Visser (piano) in the Rhodesian Academy of Music’s series included the first Rhodesian performance of the second violin sonata of contemporary British composer, Edmund Rubbra.

One of the best Academy recitals

The mezzo-soprano voice can be something of a musical Cinderella, lacking both the brilliance of the soprano and the warmth of the contralto. But Miss Alexandra’ Cook’s lunch-hour recital yesterday (Rhodesian Academy of Music) proved that when intelligently used it can have an appeal all of its own.
