Pianist prove ability

A number of pupils who gained awards in the Eistedfod performed at the Rhodesian Academy of Music’s presentation concert last night.

It did not matter that only a handful of the young performers showed indications of exceptional talent. What again emerged clearly is that all the children have had responsible fostering of whatever ability they possess.

Most children still choose the piano as their instrument. But a trumpeter, a flautist and three violinists all showed promise.

The standard of piano playing was high. Some of the younger virtuosi could not resist playing twice as fast as their teachers would ever allow, but none came to grief.

In the older pianists I missed a legato, singing line much of the time, but several played with real understanding, including the first non-adult performance of Chopin I have been able to enjoy.
